In the boys’ championship at Rutgers University, the Central High Blue Devils won their first state championship since 1964. Central defeated Ewing 66-58 in a tough game. Leading Central was Ramon Johnson with 23 points and teammate Kameen McPleasant had 19 points and 6 rebounds. Now at 29-4, Central High School moves on to play in the 2011 Tournament of Champions. In prior games, the Blue Devils beat Pascack Hills 63-53 along with a win over Ridgefield Park.
Meanwhile, the Malcolm X Shabazz girls’ basketball team is finishing up where they left off from last year, winning their second state championship in a row. The Lady Bulldogs beat Pascack Hills by a score of 60-32 in Toms River. Leading MXS was junior guard and MVP Aliyyah Handford with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman Zaire O’neil had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Alyesha Lovett added 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Shabazz dominated the game from the start, playing great defense and shooting 50 percent from the field.
In a prior game, Shabazz had a closer than usual win against Point Pleasant Boro 65-58. Handford contributed 19 points in that contest while Lovett added 16 points. The Bulldogs, now 33-0, will compete in the Tournament of Champions.
