High School Basketball Recap

This past week, Saint Benedict's Prep from Newark competed in the Dan Finn Classic in Jersey City. The squad defeated New Church Academy 75-42. Leading Saint Benedict's was senior Myck Kabongo who led with 12 rebounds and 10 points. St. Benedict's, who is now 12-1 on the year, forced 27 turnovers.

In other action, Malcolm X Shabazz was defeated by Plainfield in the Essex-Union challenge at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth 49-38. Among the teams in the event was Newark's East Side High.

In girls' basketball, the Shabazz Lady Bulldogs competed in the same Finn Classic, and got a tough challenge. It took them two overtimes to defeat Colts Neck High 56-47. Leading Shabazz was Aliyyah Hanford, who scored 24 points. Kadeidre Simmons added 16 points. The Bulldogs upcoming game against Columbia will be for the top ranking in Essex County.

Other results included the Orange girls' team losing in an afternoon contest against Newark Tech. East Orange beat Science High School by the score of 67-49.

Seton Hall Defeats Cincinnati in First Big East Win This Year

seton_hazelThe Seton Hall men's basketball team on January 9th won a key Big East game against Cincinnati 83-76 in Newark. Despite being down by 12 at one point, the Hall rallied for a 25-1 run to defeat the Bearcats. The Pirates are now 10-5 overall and 1-4 in the tough Big East conference.

Jeremy Hazell once again led the team in scoring, netting 33 points on 10-22 shooting. Herb Pope had 14 points on 5-9 shooting and 7 rebounds. Head coach Bobby Gonzalez said the team has to win key games, and was happy for the victory. He also noted that his team has beaten Cincinnati three years in a row.

The Pirates have two key games coming up against Georgetown and Louisville.

Essex County High School Basketball Recap

The Seton Hall Prep boys' team on Thursday Jan 8th defeated East Orange 82-51 in a Super Essex Conference game. Leading Prep was Sterling Gibbs with 23 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. John Caprio added 19 points. East Orange was led by Mahamudou Kaba and Terrell Whittle with 11 points and 10 points respectively. Both are local rivals in the old Iron Hills Division conference.

Seton Hall Women Suffer Hard Loss to Top Ranked Connecticut

seton2-600The Seton Hall women's team suffered its first loss of the season in the Big East on January 2nd at the Prudential Center in Newark. The final score was 91-24, with the Connecticut Lady Huskies dominating the whole game. At halftime, the score was 52-12.

Leading UConn was All American player Maya Moore, who went 5-9 from the field and led her team with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Tina Charles added 19 points and 8 rebounds for the game. Overall, the Lady Huskies shot 56.7 percent, while the Lady Pirates were only 17.3 percent. For Seton Hall, Nicole Emery had 6 points and 3 rebounds. Ebonie Williams added 9 points. SHU turned the ball over 28 times.

Orange-East Orange Hoops Rivalry Renewed

The Orange and East Orange rivalry has been renewed in girls' basketball. This time, both teams are in the Super Essex Conference division for the match up.

The Lady Jaguars defeated the Orange Tornadoes by the score of 53-32. In this game, East Orange led 31-16 at the half, and was ahead of Orange the entire game. Leading East Orange was guard Shaiah Johnson and Delisha Thompson. Orange was spurred by Aquiyah Williams with 10 points.
