“The Boss” George Steinbrenner Dies at 80

On July 13, 2010, the controversial but charismatic owner of the New York Yankees succumbed to a massive heart attack at the age of 80. George Steinbrenner, who recently celebrated a birthday on the Fourth of July, passed away two days after another Yankee legend, public address announcer Bob Sheppard, died at the age of 99.

Steinbrenner, an Ohio native, made his fortune in the shipbuilding industry, and was even an assistant collegiate football coach at Ohio State, Northwestern, and Purdue. He bought the New York Yankees in 1973 for $8.7 million, in which Forbes recently reported the value of the franchise currently at $1.6 billion. In 1977, the Yankees won their first title under Steinbrenner, and followed that up with another World Series crown in 1978. His relationship with manager Billy Martin was volatile, leading to Steinbrenner hiring and firing Martin on several occasions.
