Newark Announces Homicide-Free Month of March

Newark_City_HallNEWARK, NJ - As of 12:00 midnight on April 1, the City of Newark reached a monumental milestone. For the first time since 1966, the city had an entire month devoid of homicides. Many people who heard the news had to be reassured that it was not an April Fool's joke.

So far in 2010, Newark has only seen ten homicides. The city has made key arrests, both under normal conditions and in addition to major operations, such as “Operation Justice.” This effort was announced at Garden Spires and brought in 149 arrests.

Shootings, robberies, and other crime level statistics are down as well. At present, the city has gone 32 days without a homicide. Should the streak extend to 44 days, it would be the best stretch of homicide-free days since 1961.

On his Twitter account, Mayor Cory Booker posted, “We did it! 1st calendar free month without a murder since 1966!”

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy cited hard work as a major reason for the city’s law enforcement successes.
