Editor's Note 8/21/2012

DHIRENHello Readers,

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney selected his running mate last week. Despite everyone expecting New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to be his running mate, Romney selected Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin instead. His selection is based on Ryan’s track record. Ryan is a chairman of the Budget Committee. As soon as Romney announced his candidacy, the Democrats blasted him with negative emails. As a voter, I personally would like to check all of the credentials of Paul Ryan before I commit to anyone candidate. I like Obama, but this is about me and my country’s future, and I would like to check the best scenario for our future. I leave this up to the voters to decide who they have to vote for. Yes, with a minority candidate, Obama and Biden are the favorites right now in my personal opinion.

In United States, the economy is hurting everyone, especially the middle and poor working class. They work hard to make their ends meet, and now they do not have a little luxury to go to a nice restaurant or take a vacation of their choice. George W. Bush messed up our economy, but Obama has not done a great job either. All are working for rich people and our tax dollars are going to the rich or politicians. When it comes to political events and political power, waste is not in their dictionary. At any political event, I see it filled with government employees on their regular work time. Even though it will not count as part of the event expense, if we add it up the time paid to those employees - most of them are high paid employees - the cost of event will go sky high.

The crisis of war between Iran and Israel has drawn the attention of the world. After two months of quietness, Israel is pushing the US to back them for a war with Iran. According to the Christian Monitor, the August 14th attack on Israeli tourists in the Bulgarian town of Burgas is the eighth major incident in which Israel has accused the Iranian government and its allies of planning to attack, or of attacking, Israeli citizens. Iran denies involvement in any of the incidents, but it accuses Israel of a string of deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists over the past year.  The media and US politicians have portrayed Iran as guilty. I don’t say it is out of the question, but being made guilty without all of the facts makes a one sided story. The same thing happened with the war in Iraq. There were no Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), but we ended up in a war that cost thousands of lives and our economy was damaged.

Local Talk Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization, announced its Third Annual High School Students Public Speaking Contest on October 20, 2012. Last year, we had the event at the Robert Treat Hotel, but due to their bad service, we have decided to move back to Bella Italia Restaurant in Orange, NJ. This year, we made some changes to the event. First, we have invited more schools, Public, Charter and Private high schools. These schools must have a minimum enrollment of 100 high school level students, that is, students in grades 9-12. Second, we have raised the first prize scholarship to $4,000, while the second and third prizes remain the same as $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. The deadline for the entries will be on October 5, 2012. Only the first 18 entries will be allowed to participate. So, to all of the students and parents, please follow through with your high school for the procedures needed and let them know to file your entry as your school’s representative as early as possible.

Have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you next week.
